Magic Lenses?
Most people are familiar that there are eyeglasses for the colorblind on the market. The widest known are called EnChroma and are pictured below. They retail for about $375.00. If you search Etsy you will find many other types for less money. The EnChroma glasses have mixed results. The Washington Post published an article (November 26, 2019) about a middle school student that found the glasses very helpful. Read the article here.
You can watch youtube videos of people sobbing because they can see the colors as they are. I’m not buying that it works for the vast majority of colorblindguys! I was able to track down one of the people seen in the videos. He claims they work for him and doesn’t wear them inside. He also is afraid to put them in harms way due to the cost.
If you read reviews of the glasses you’ll discover many comments like: “Didn’t work for me.” If you look on eBay, you’ll find people selling them with a “no returns” in place.
I’m not going to state that the videos are staged, but I don’t think these glasses address the basic issue. The basic issue is that colorblindguys are missing cones. I bet the glasses make things wildly vivid. Here’s an article that “debunks” the company’s claims. Seems to be taking advantage of colorblindguys. Why the high price? If I had a pair of these glasses, I’d be crying for spending the money. My daughter wanted to have the family chip in and purchase the glasses and I am happy to report that I convinced them NOT to buy them. I hope to try a pair eventually-I’ve found an out of town obstetrician that will let me but down a deposit and let me try them for 2 weeks .
As I was researching the topic of colorblindness, I came upon a movie called “Life without Color”
It’s on Amazon prime. It tackles a few different vision issues including color deficiency better known as being colorblind. It featured a person who wanted to be a pilot but couldn’t pass the color portion of the test. He was sad he couldn’t fulfill his dream to be a pilot. He learns about Dr Azman who invented special lenses (contacts and eyeglasses) that claim that colorblindguys can pass the various vision tests used for certain careers –100% guarantee. The movie ends on a happy note because he was able to pass the test.
Check out Dr. Azman’s site here! I inquired about the cost. Be forewarned that the price is $9,800. In a nutshell patients typically travel to his office in Maryland. They spend the day being examined and tested. The patient leaves the same day with their color correcting lenses. The focus is on the ability to pass the Ishihara test for employment purposes. In an email sent to me, Dr. Azman stated he has been doing this since 1999 and has 100% success!
Here’s a detailed and scientific discussion about the glasses for colorblind people.
Adding the missing gene
An attempt to “cure” colorblindness is being made by injecting a missing gene in the retina of a squirrel monkey. The video below explains the attempt. The video is on the Genevolve website.
In this video, doctors explain the procedure and methodology of their research.
